Securing Your Data

One of the most neglected areas of computing within many organisations is data security. This is because it can be time-consuming and seems to bring no noticeable benefit in terms of profit.

However, good data-security management and housekeeping may prevent a business from huge losses - both financially and in terms of time. There is nothing more frustrating than losing several months of work through a hard disk failure, for example, or more damaging to one's reputation than sending out viruses to one's customers! (This cannot always be helped because of email spoofing - whereby one's own email address is lifted from someone else's address book by a virus on their computer)

One of the things which I find most astonishing is just how many people have anti-virus software installed on their computers but never update it! Another is how rarely people bother to back up their data.

To this effect, I have compiled some tips to help you protect your data.(Please note that these are personal recommendations and I take no legal responsibility for the results of following the advice given. It is your responsibility to check things out if you are unsure).

How to install new software safely
How to prevent freezes, lockups and crashes
How to make backups
How to prevent surges and spikes
How to prevent intrusions and invasion of privacy
How to avoid viruses
How to keep one's disk drive in good working order
