your own health!
Your own health as well as that of your pc and its data is important too. Here are a few tips which I find useful:
- Place your monitor as far from you as you can comfortably view the screen. Bear in mind that you can alter the screen resolution, the size and weight of the Windows fonts, the background colours etc., to make the screen easier to read from a greater distance. Go to Start | Settings | Control Panel | Display | Appearance and Settings. Most programmes also allow you to make similar adjustments, usually under Tools | Options or Edit | Preferences.
- Screen filters can reduce electromagnetic fields but they must be properly earthed to do so; use the grounding cord supplied. Make sure that the filter is the correct way round too!
- Avoid sitting too close to the back or sides of someone else's monitor.
- LCD screens do not produce the kind of electromagnetic field that CRT screens do; however, they do use a fluorescent backlight which emits ultra-violet light. You should use a UV-reducing screen filter with an LCD monitor.
- The system unit, and certain peripherals such as printers also produce electromagnetic fields, so it is wise not to position these too close to where you or anyone else sits for a sustained period.
- Cordless technology relies on infra-red transmissions - I don't know what the health implications of this are, but I would advise caution.
- Take a five minute break away from your screen every half hour - I have set a reminder on my own computer which flashes up every half hour - it really helps me!
- If you can, do a shorter working week - after all, if we all worked less hours there would be more jobs to go round and we would be healthier and have more time for our loved ones, and for exercise, relaxation, etc. Work and money aren't the only things in life!
