Qualifications & TrainingIn 2002 I successfully completed a course entitled "Computer Mastery" via Scheidegger Training, and I was planning to take the associated exams for the CompTIA A+ Certification*, although I obtained employment early in 2003 while I was studying for my exams and therefore had to temporarily put this to one side. The Scheidegger course involved essay-writing too, which tested my ability to express my knowledge as well as demonstrate that I could answer questions accurately and thoroughly. I also passed with distinction the City and Guilds Examinations 7262-24-401 (Maintain Equipment and Systems) and 7262-24-403 (Install and Configure Equipment & Operating Systems), and I passed the related Multiple Choice exam 7262-24-451 which focuses on Health & Safety and Customer Service matters. Although not involving as high a level of knowledge as A+, these exams are much more practically focussed and demonstrate actual rather than merely theoretical ability. In addition, I successfully completed a PC Networking course at Lewisham College in 2001 and obtained the City and Guilds 7261-222 (Networking Level 2) qualification. The course was set at a significantly higher standard than the City and Guilds syllabus and was designed to prepare for the MCSE exams 70-58 (Networking Fundamentals), and 70-210/215 (Windows 2000). These can be undertaken at a later date if I wish. In early 2001 I also took a course in web site design and development using HTML hand-coding, stylesheets, and javascript, plus a taste of ASP. The course covered all the standard areas of HTML, such as lists, tables, forms, images, image-mapping, links, frames, plus an introduction to stylesheets. This site is hand-coded although I have used snippets of code and tweaked them where I have not known how to build the code from the ground up. I also studied the main aspects of JavaScript, namely variables and data-types, strings. arrays, arithmetic, logical and comparison operators, conditional statements and loops, functions, the Document Object Model, extraction of information from and validation of forms and the internet and browser environment. I particularly enjoyed this aspect of the course and although there is not as yet a lot of javaScript on this site, I will be adding functions etc. as and when I have time. There was a little SQL and VbScript as part of a taste of ASP. ASP seemed pretty formidable, requiring one to be able to integrate HTML, SQL, and Visual Basic all together, but it seemed quite interesting. In summer 2004 I was trained in the basics of PHP and MySQL by Kevin Mackenzie of Fileanta. I gained a better understanding of the workings of database-driven websites, and how to write simple scripts. I managed to build, unaided, as an exercise, a simple content management system, after I completed the course and I am happy to send you the files if you want to see a sample of my own work. However I do not regard myself as a web-scripter or a programmer, but rather a website administrator who knows a bit about how scripts work and how to tweak them when required. Much of my broad range of computer skills have developed through general experience, and it this expertise that I am able to bring to you. *Comptia A+ |
