Stability and Performance - controlling the applications which load at startup

< previous

A common cause of problems is the fact that your computer may have a lot of programmes loaded into memory, and be running a lot of processes in the background, without your being aware of the fact.

A useful little utility for displaying this information is Process Explorer, and it may astonish you just how much is going on behind your back! However, many of these processes, usually loaded at start-up, are necessary, and you have to be careful only to remove the processes which are not.

This issue is dealt with very comprehensively at www.pacs-portal.co.uk so I wont repeat their advice here. However, I would add that it is best to use the preferences or options or settings menu within the programmes in question to prevent them from loading at startup, rather than the startup control panel alone.

Next we shall look at a slightly more esoteric area - namely, managing the swap file.
