viruses, worms and trojans - email attachments

< previous

Do NOT open an email carrying an attachment,  unless:

  1. You know who the sender is, AND

  2. You know that the sender meant to send the email, AND

  3. You know that the sender scans documents for viruses prior to sending them, using up-to-date anti-virus software. (Even if the sender is aware of the issue, they may still have a virus latent in their system, which could infect the documents they attach).

If you are viewing an attachment and you have anti-virus software choose the option to "Save it to Disc", rather than "Open It". (This option needs to be enabled in certain versions of Outlook Express). Then scan the file for viruses prior to opening it.

It may be worth waiting until you have next updated your anti-virus software before opening the attachment as some new viruses may reach your pc before your anti-virus software vendor has detected the virus, and provided the relevant update. If you can wait, then wait! Please see notes regarding anti-virus software further on.
