viruses, worms and trojans - other email precautions

< previous

Disable the Preview Pane in Outlook Express. The Preview Pane, in effect, opens any email which is highlighted in your inbox. Some virus-carrying email attachments are activated merely by opening the email. To disable the Preview Pane, click on View | Layout and remove the tick from the checkbox for the Preview Pane. (Note also that when you are reading an email in Outlook Express and you choose to delete it, Outlook Express automatically jumps to the immediately adjacent email in your inbox and opens it).

You should also open your emails when you are OFFLINE. After downloading your emails, disconnect, and then open your emails. This may help to reduce the risk of a virus immediately emailing itself to people in your address book. Moreover, some emails link you directly to websites when you are on-line, and some of these websites are designed to run viruses (and other unwanted things) on your computer.
