viruses, worms and trojans

I have provided a series of simple steps to protecting a computer against viruses, worms and trojans. However, the recent Blaster and Sasser worms have demonstrated the need for a firewall as part of a proper defence against viruses. The speed with which such attacks can occur is so rapid, that updates to the anti-virus software cannot keep up. A firewall helps to protects your computer against such problems. I have covered firewalls under the section entitled "intrusion protection". I would urge you to read this before you read the section on viruses if you are not familiar with the issues.

I am frequently called upon to install and configure anti-virus and anti-intrusion software. I am astonished at how little understanding there is of the need to update and configure such software properly - I have lost count of the number of times I have found that people have never updated their virus-definition database, nor have heuristics enabled, (and in the case of older anti-virus sotware, have only programme files protected, and not data files which can carry macro viruses) leaving their computer vulnerable to all the new viruses which are being produced every day!

I have often had to download emergency utilities from the internet, boot into DOS or Safe Mode to run them, and then re-install their anti-virus software which has become corrupted. As a result of seeing how many people do not protect their computer properly from viruses, I have published the following virus advice.

The following advice is mainly for users of typical Windows PCs with Outlook Express / Internet Explorer etc.
